What Exactly Are Biologics?

At their core, biologics are drugs produced using living systems. Unlike conventional medications—which are often small molecules produced through precise chemical reactions—biologics are manufactured using microorganisms, plant cells, or animal cells. These substances are highly sophisticated and often include proteins, nucleic acids, or even entire cells.

Because they are grown in living environments, the production process is incredibly intricate. Scientists must carefully control the growth conditions of these cells to ensure the final product is safe and effective. How Do They Work?

Biologics are celebrated for their targeted therapy capabilities. The Role of Biosimilars

As the patents for many original biologic medications expire, the industry has seen the rise of biosimilars. A biosimilar is a biological product that is highly similar to an already approved biologic (the reference product). Because biologics are so complex, it is impossible to create an exact “generic” copy, but biosimilars undergo rigorous testing to ensure they have no clinically meaningful differences in safety, purity, or potency compared to the original.
